Ancient Poetry Leaf - Safavid Persian #1 - circa 1775 AD





- a leaf of poetry from a large Safavid manuscript
- handwritten circa 1775 AD
- provenance is Persia
- there are text on both sides of the leaf, with similar illumination
- each page contains 15 lines of Farsi text written in nastaliq script, using black ink on fine hand made polished paper
- central text block is enclosed in a floral border of painted gold and rules of gold and blue
- diagonal marginal commentary surrounds the text and is decorated with 3 gold devices and 5 additional rules
- the text is most likely from one of the many collections of secular poetry popular in the Persian Empire
- leaf measures 5.5" x 9.25"

Ancient Qur'an Leaves (Bifolium) - Kashmir - circa 1750 AD




- short surahs from Qur'an
- handwritten circa 1750 AD
- provenance is Kashmir, Northern India
- a pair of 2 leaves or bifolium
- there are text on both sides of the leaves, with similar illumination
- each page contains 13 lines of elegant naskh script written on fine cream paper in black ink
- text is highlighted with red ink, verses are marked by small gold discs
- there are gold cloud illumination on 3 lines of text on each page
- leaves measure 8" x 7"
- these are fragrant manuscripts, very sweet smelling but i'm not sure whether the fragrance comes from the paper or the ink

- short surahs from Qur'an
- handwritten circa 1750 AD
- provenance is Kashmir, Northern India
- 5 loose leaves
- there are text on both sides of the leaves, with similar illumination
- each side contains 13 lines of elegant naskh script written on fine cream paper in black ink
- on each side text is highlighted with red ink, verses are marked by small gold discs
- there are gold cloud illumination on 5 lines of text on 1 side of 1 leaf
- there are gold cloud illumination on 3 lines of text on the other 9 pages of the leaves
- leaves measure 8" x 7"
- these are fragrant manuscripts, very sweet smelling but i'm not sure whether the fragrance comes from the paper or the ink
